Volume 49 - Adrian Galindo

ADRIAN GALINDO

Alright, I have been getting into a few more of these bands in the last 3-4 yrs. I don't know why, other than, I dig the energy and some of them have some really good songs and the musicianship is pretty good. I was fortunate to discover another such band and drummer. Adrian is in a kool band called OVERDRIVE. I met and saw them perform on their first show in the U.S. on Aug. 23rd at The Viper Room in Hollywood. They were the opening band and my band played after them at a fundraising show. I was impressed and enjoyed their show.
So, naturally I had to get Adrian to share some of his drum life with us. He is definitely coming up and I think their tour will be a big step in their success. So before he becomes famous, Adrian is Talkin' Chop with me and you.

*

Name or Stage Name:
Adrian Galindo

Where are you from?
Monterrey, Mexico

How long have you been playing?
5 years now

What is or are your main genre of playing?
Everything between Pop/punk and Post Hardcore

How did you get where you are now?
We have been working even harder that we though we were going to work, nothing is easy, but is always possible. If you work hard enough in the right way to get somewhere, eventually you will get there, maybe not in the way you wanted, but it will be the best way you could have done.

What are your goals, short & long term?
Personally, my main short goal is to always be a better drummer that I was yesterday and that leads me to my long term goals that are being recognized worldwide as a band and drummer, and return the favor to people like me, that the music I listened and listen now made me the way I am, and that is something I wouldn’t change for anything in the world.

Artists you would like to play for, if you had the chance? I’ve always believed that bands are better with their own drummer but if I had the chance to play with someone that doesn’t have the same drummer, I would choose Eminem, Michael Bublé and Justin Bieber.

List some of your accomplishments:
Had the chance to make tours with my band mates that are the people that I love most. Some sponsorship's and the chance to share stage with amazing bands such as Get Scared and Pierce The Veil.

Your currently in a band called Overdrive, What kind of band is this?
It is the kind of band that you listen to, and have the chance to appreciate every instrument and have this extra plus with the amazing voice of Luis, it is the perfect combination of aggressive and happy, that for sure will make you dance your feet.

How did the band form?
Me and Luis Tamez (my long time best friend) have been making music together for years, and as we got older we started to think to ourselves what we wanted as musicians and where do we wanted to get, and formed this band with the purpose of people enjoying it and making them feel alive just as we felt with our favorite bands, we never knew how we gonna get here but we are and there is a long way ahead of us that we are very excited to live!

Tell me about recording your album Let's Run Away
It was one of the best experiences of my whole life, it is something that if you are a musician you definitely have to do at least one time, it was the first time I was doing it, it was a day to remember.

What was your approach for this album?
We wanted the songs to represent ourselves and our feelings, we have always thought that if you want something, you have to believe in yourself and push yourself to do it, no matter what, you can always reach your goals.

Adrian, Luis, Eduardo & David

Were you involved in the production of the drums?
The sound is very clean.
Thank you! And yes, I was, our two producers, Jorge and Edgar with Luis and I we were all involved in the production of the drums, it was a hard work but it is always for the best, especially in the studio.

Is that the vibe you were going for?
That was exactly it! I personally wanted that sound, and with the help of my friends we reached it, I could not be more happy on how the drums sound in the album.

How long did it take you guys to finish the album?
We finished like in two months I think, the drums along with the bass were the fastest parts, we recorded the drums of the 10 songs in just one day, Luis recorded 2 of them and I did the other 8, we've been a good team and that way we could record everything in a period of 13 hours.

Do you like being in the studio?
Yes, I love it. It is this magical place where anything can be created for you to hear, you just need the right tools and the right minds to do it, and thanks to my friends and the team we had, we made it.

Are you one of the songwriters in the band?
I write most of the drums along with Luis, and also some arrangements in both guitar and vocals, in our album ‘Let’s Run Away’ I didn’t write any lyrics but we are actually making new music where I’ve been writing some of them.

OVERDRIVE - Baby You're Too Late

As Indie bands, you have to hustle to make things happen... do you perform any other roles in the band, other than drummer?
Yeah, we all have certain roles other than playing our instrument, is something you have to do to grow as a band, I’m more focused on getting shows for us, the more, the better.

You guys are on tour right now in the USA for the first time, how are things going and do you like touring? Things are going pretty great! We’ve been having our difficulties, but we’ve been solving them right away, is something that happens to all bands and it just depends on how you solve it. And yeah, as far as this has gone we LOVE touring, it is an amazing experience that everyone who has the chance to live it, should do it, I recommend it a 100% it is very fun and you learn a lot from it.

What are some of your goals as a band?
The main goal we have as a band is to transmit whatever we are feeling on the songs to the people, we put so much effort and feeling into creating, recording and playing songs that our main goal is to people to feel alive, just like we feel when we play, and to grow along with them, as they grow up they make us grow as a band, having bigger crowds and more people know us and have a little taste of what we do.

How is the music scene in Mexico, where you guys are from?
In Mexico, there is too much talent and the scene is pretty cool too, there are plenty of opportunities, they are just focused in another direction than the ones in The States.

Are the crowds pretty good? Are you able to do some pretty good shows there?
The crowds are great, they always are very into it in every song, they sing every lyric, we feel very lucky to have fans like the ones we have, we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them.

Describe your current set up & gear - heads and sticks...ect?
I have a Mapex V series 5 piece drum kit, a Tama S. L. P. 14x8 snare, all my cymbals are Zildjian, 14’’ Hi-Hats, 16’’ Crash, 19’’ Crash-Ride, 20’’ Ride and 18’’ China. A double bass pedal DW 7000.

Do you have multiple kits and snares?
I have two snares, the one I mentioned, and another one Mapex V series 14x6.5. And I have an electronic kit at my house.

Do you have a “Dream Kit”?
Yes! I do! My dream kit is an SJC 5 piece drum kit with two floor toms, a 14x8 maple snare, some Zildjian A custom and a double bass pedal DW 9000.

How do you describe your drumming style?
I describe it as energetic, I’m always moving and feeling the songs, obviously sometimes I have to concentrate a little more than other parts, but I’m always having fun!

OVERDRIVE - Pack Your Bags

Why the drums?
They are so energetic and I’ve always been that way too, is the best way for me to forget everything and express everything I feel at the same time.

If you weren’t playing drums, what would you be doing? Honestly I think that would be doing something music related still, if it wasn’t drums, maybe I would play guitar or bass.

How has drumming impacted or changed your life?
My life totally changed when playing drums, it changed in a very good way, for me it is the perfect way to escape, whenever I’m angry, or just not in the mood for something and I start to play, I relax a lot and that way it makes me see everything from a different perspective, also it makes me more active in life in general, I have more energy to do everything when I drum everyday.

Are you playing music as a full time career?
Not right now, right now I have another job in the mornings and that way I have all afternoon free to play and practice with Overdrive, also with that job I get a little money extra to invest in the band, but we are all working for it to be a full time career, and we will make it!

Are you involved in the local music scene in your hometown, other than just playing in your band?
Yeah, actually we all get involved whenever we can, to help bands reach their short term goals and help them make events in a better way, I’ve always believed that if all we help each other, we can change the whole world.

Name 5 of your drumming influences? Why?
Well, I started drumming because of Travis Barker, so it has to be one of my influences. Another one for sure is Luke Holland, this guy is amazing and can do a lot of things at once, I got the chance to meet him, he is a great guy. Another two of the same style are Conor Sullivan from Ice Nine Kills and Josh Manuel from ISSUES they are very fast and awesome with the double pedal. And last but not least Rian Dawson from All Time Low, I love the energy this guy has on-stage and also in the studio, you can feel what he was feeling when you listen to their songs is pretty amazing!

Name an inspiring concert that made you want to go home and start practicing?
The most inspiring concert I’ve ever been too is the one of my favorite band, All Time Low with three great support bands, ISSUES, Tonight Alive & State Champs, this one was on Houston in April 27th 2015, it is the most amazing and inspiring concert I’ve ever been too.

How much time do you practice?
At least I practice 8 hours a week, every time I have time to practice more I do it but at least is 8 hours a week, an average I would say 10 hours a week.

What types of things do you work on, in those sessions? Independence, coordination, speed and resistance are the ones I practice the most, I want to be better in every way.

Are you doing any freelance work other than Overdrive? I have it on plans and maybe I’ll start next year (2017) but haven’t released anything yet, I’m going to start releasing some covers of songs I like and upload them to YouTube and more social media so that I and Overdrive can get connected to more people, hopefully they’ll enjoy it.

Do you record drum videos of yourself? if so, how has it helped you?
Yes, and it helps a lot to see and hear yourself from a different perspective, you hear your mistakes and you can also see how you move and is easier for you to improve into a better drummer.

OVERDRIVE - Cool Kids (Echosmith Cover)

Do you have a crazy or interesting gig you can share with us?
Yeah! One of them is when we played with Pierce The Veil and Mexico, they are awesome dudes and we had this amazing and supporting crowd, it was an awesome show with great people.

What are your words of wisdom for your fellow drummers out there?
I can say that it is always hard to get better and to get chances but no matter what, you can always keep pushing yourself into the next level, and even if you don’t see any progress, there is, you may not notice it but when you think back when your skills weren’t that good, you will notice your improvements and that is one of the greatest feelings.

Last Words, Links, Hashtags and Thank You’s???
I just want to thank Talkin’ Chop for this interview, my band mates, specially Luis Tamez for pushing me to be a better drummer, to my closest friends Edgar and Kevin and to my family and my girlfriend Monnie for always supporting me in everything that I do.

Volume 48 - Luis Navarrette

LUIS NAVARRETTE

Drums, Drumming and Drummers, It never stops around here! lol!!!
I got another hard working, professional musician here to talk about his career. I dig it because it's my favorite subject and I get to meet some kool people, like Luis!
It's pretty kool finding out these kats exist in your backyard and are doing well. It's not an easy life and career choice, as we all know but the reward is better than anyone outside of our world will know. It seems as if Luis has been collecting some of those rewards already and is primed to do some more great work and have fun doing it.
So let's find out what Luis Navarrette is Talkin' Chop about...

*

Name or Stage Name:
Luis Navarrette

Where are you from?
I was born in Santiago, Chile, but I currently live in California.

How long have you been playing?
I started when I was 11 years old and I had my first band a year after that... It's been 25 years now.

What is or are your main genre of playing?
I'm a very versatile drummer. I've done everything from Rock, Funk, R&B, Jazz, Latin, Country and Broadway Musicals, but my main genre is R&B.

How did you get where you are now?
After studying privately with Francisco Koch — known for his work with the band Viena — I entered the Carlos Figueroa School of Music in Santiago. Drawn to the U.S. music scene, I then attended the Los Angeles Music Academy College of Music Professionals were I graduated in 2005. After school I stayed in L.A and played with a couple of bands. That's how everything started, it's all word of mouth in this "business", but mainly I think it's all about being resilient, studying , doing research and of course practicing a lot.. if you can play well enough you will get gigs, but you will have to be ready and pull off the gig.

What are your goals, short & long term?
Finish my first solo album and publish an instructional drum video in spanish.

Your Spanish educational video: What is the reason for you doing one is Spanish? Are there a lack of drum videos in Spanish?
Well Yes, there's not to many of them out there.. at least with a good translation... lol

Artists you would like to play for?
Too Many... but I think Steve Lukather would be a dream come true.

List some of your accomplishments:
finished music school...lol.. that was tough..

What projects are you currently working on?
Just my CD

What kind of solo album are you doing? Is it more drum oriented or more mainstream?

It's definite drum oriented, where I try to play different types of rhythms. There will be a little of every genre of music..

*Here's a sample of Luis' work via soundcloud link:

What are your touring experiences, if any?
None, I don't like being in the road.. Im more of a local session guy.

Doing a lot of studio work, What is your preparation process like to work a session?
Mainly physically, I do try to sleep well the night before. I also don't drink coffee or energy drinks the day before... I do stretch and warm up before going to the session just basic paradiddles exercises nothing fancy.. I do try to get over there early in case there's a chart so I can look at it before hand and take notes.. There's not much to prepare for musically.. there's always changes in the spot.. so you just have to adjust quickly for what they want..

Describe your current set up & gear - heads and sticks...ect?

DRUMS
1993 GMS Grand Master Series Maple 7x8/8x10/8x12/12x14/14x15/16x22
CYMBALS

STICKS
Regal Tip by Calato Chop Stick model & Jeff Porcaro signature model
HEADS
Remo Heads Coated ambassador & Coated power stroke on kick drums also Remo fiberskin and black dot controlled sound

Do you have multiple kits and snares?
Yes

Are you a gear junkie?
Used to... not anymore only what I need around to provide different sounds on a session, if there's something I need I just rent it..

Do you have a “Dream Kit”?
Not really, like Jeff Porcaro said a drum is a drum..

How do you describe your drumming style?
Pocket and groove

Why the drums?
Since I was a kid every time we had music class in school we would ran into the classroom and I always grab the xylophone.. then for an unknown reason I would get my Mother's pan's out of the kitchen and play them..
One day back 1986 I saw this Argentinian Rock band on TV and I saw this drummer on this wired space like shaped Roland set.... And that did it for me.. I knew that I was suppose to play the drums

If you weren’t playing drums, what would you be doing?
Playing sports or doing some wood craft related work

How has drumming impacted or changed your life?
Drumming has been everything for me... has impacted me on every field of my life, but not only drumming, music in general. Every single major decision I made in my life was made because of drumming.. I walked out of an economics class in college and moved to the U.S. because of drumming.. I met my wife because of drumming...

Are you doing music full time?
Yes

Are you supporting the local music scene?
always, If we don't help each other nobody will...

Name 5 of your drumming influences? why?
Jeff Porcaro / groove and feel..
Steve Ferrone / Pocket
Vinnie Colaiuta / open my mind into odd meters
Max Roach / musicality
Charly Alberti / Feel and taught me how to play..

Jeff Pocaro is a huge influence on me and a number of us. What is it about his work that you draw him to you?
He's feel of course, but also his classic drum sound, specially that huge Tom sound. It was the 80's and the electronic drums were emerging and there was a lot of over produced drum sounds on band like The Power Station and Duran Duran.. But what really did it for me was Jeffrey's 16th notes at one hand.. they are just killer..!

Name an inspiring concert that made you want to go home and start shedding?
1993 TOTO Kingdom of Desire Tour Simon Phillips on drums

How much time do you practice?
I try 2 to 4 hours a day

What types of things do you work on, in those sessions?
Playing in front and behind a click, Jazz Improvisation , Music vocabulary ideas, Some sight-reading and playing Techniques stuff..

Do you record drum videos of yourself? if so, how has it helped you?
I do for myself to check on what I need to improve, but No I don't do youtube videos.. Too many out there..

Do you have a crazy or interesting gig you can share with us?
I had this Gig in Houston,Texas where I was suppose to play for this artist from Austin who was on tour and had this last minute booking in Houston and had no drummer for some reason the drummer was sent to Dallas I think for the next show.. so I get the call the night before, I didn't know the guy or the music but I knew I would be OK. So I showed up and there's 2 other bands opening for us that day.. Guess what...? I wind up playing for all of them.. 6 hours straight..

So, having done a gig, where your playing for artists you've never played for before,
How do you feel your background and experience prepared you for something like that?
Your Music background is everything... I've been lucky to have played with a lot of people, with good and bad musicians and that has giving me a lot of experience. You can have a lot of experience and of course that helps, but your music background is everything. You can be a very technical guy know all the rudiments and have bunch of chops, but if you have no knowledge of the music you are playing and it's concept.. you cannot pull off the gig.. That's why I always tell my students to listen to all kinds of music and do the homework on those styles... who are the best drummers on those styles? if any..? and where they come from..?

What are your words of wisdom for your fellow drummers out there?
Don't give up!! Keep practicing.. Practice slower tempos.. Listen to all types of music, learn how to read music!! Don't get frustrated, if is not happening leave and pick it up next day... don't do drugs..!! eat and sleep well .... and Keep it grooving..!!

I would like to thank De for this interview,
My wife, family and everyone that has helped me on this journey..
Special thanks:
Mary Minter at Augusta Music
to my friends Aaron Serfaty, Mike Shapiro and my teachers Joe Porcaro, Ralph Humprey..

Big Thanks 2 Luis for letting us into his world for a moment.
It's nice to see kats are still working the studio gigs, we need more live drums on these projects.
Once again we hear how versatility is a key in our success as drummers. Regardless of the genre(s) you play, make sure you find as many angles to approach those songs as you can. Drop a "hello" on Luis when you get a chance.

Volume 47 - Emanuel Harrold

Emanuel Harrold

Hello Talkin' Chop fam,
It is another beautiful day, so let's have seat, get a kool drink and talk to another great drummer. Once again I have to thank Andre Boyd for introducing me to this kat. Emanuel is a brother that I only heard about maybe two yrs ago, when I started listening to Gregory Porter. I gotta tell ya' I really dig this kats playing and the fact that he gets to ride a spectrum of genres in his work on the Porter gig. His playing is always appropriate to the song and the vibe and it feels so good.
For me, he's one of those guys you don't know how good he is until you just sit and listen to him play. I believe that's a good sign because that means you are paying attention to the music and the song and not one individual. That's making music!
Now he's taking time out to share with us a little of what he's all about and his very busy gig. I hope you all enjoy Emanuel Harrold Talkin' Chop.

*make sure you put on Gregory Porter's Take Me To The Alley album while reading this interview.

Just a little. We tour close to 260 days yearly..

Ok, 260 days on the road, what a grind?! How do you manage that type of lifestyle?
being on the road 260 days a year is always I grind. To the airport, transport, 4am pick up's, 3hr drives, skyping and what's apping family. One day at a time to try to keep your mental physical conditions in tact..

Do you like touring in general?
Touring is great. Touring less for more funds is ideal.. 👌🏾

So, what projects are you into, when you're not on the road?
The projects I'm working on is my own EP and desires in working with artist and remixes that want something not cookie cutter, meaning just like the next person..

You guys did Later with Jools Holland. How is it, doing that show, with that format?
Jools Holland was good! Cool vibes. Jool's is a musician and enjoys the authenticity of the artist and musicians. For that episode he just said to me after his introduction, "I'll point to and that's your que into a
count off into a Prince groove with all the bands that day." That's trust. He didn't know me like that, but he trusted me as a professional to get it done live one time..

I'm imagining a kool energy in the room...
The Vibe was off the charts.. that evening on Jool's was memorable.

Do you play any other instruments?
I produce, at minimum I play at piano enough to tell you're not in A but Eb Minor. Drums are my forte.. but I will tell you if you missed your notes, rhythm is off, your in the wrong key or your idea is kinda Wack.. Things I know. lol

I prefer Keller or the way the old drums where made from the 60's and 70's.

Do you have a “Dream Kit”?
No dream kit yet. I used to want what we called a monster set but now in my musical world, that's just to much to hit.

How do you describe your drumming style?
My drum style is versatile, organic and chameleon. I try to be apart of my musical situation.

Black Nile - Drum Solo  w/ Gregory Porter

If you weren’t playing drums, what would you be doing?
Mentoring, Teaching of some sort.

How has drumming impacted or changed your life?
No real impact, just it's been my life style for more than 15years..

Name 5 of your drumming influences?
Elvin Jones, Roy Haynes, Max Roach, Art Blakey, and Bernard Purdie
Why? Between those 5 musicians, All the drums you'll ever hear has already been done 5 ways.

Name an inspiring concert that made you want to go home and start shedding?
Watching Billy Higgens play. He smiled the entire time. Only thing moved on him was his hands. He played more drums in one hand then a lot of cats we rave over today.

How much time do you practice?
While touring, there is no time to practice other than on a pillow are book In your hotel or dressing room. So the last 8 years, practicing other than on off time is on unheard of. As a touring musician the gig is traveling..

What types of things do you work on, in those sessions? Hand and feet coordination away from the drums. Playing rudiments and patterns that make since the music you are directly playing.

Do you record drum videos of yourself? if so, how has it helped you?
Not really, but the camera is on when you hit he big stage so it's good and bad stuff out there.

Do you prefer studio sessions, local live gigs or touring? At this point I just prefer to have a good night so that I can get to my thing and the band sounds great.

Gregory Porter Live "Papa Was A Rolling Stone"

Do you prefer being in the "sideman" role or would you like to have your own project?
I've had my own thing before Gregory Porter took off. Side man is cool. But being a leader is cool too. So I take it as it comes. Beggars can't be choosy and end sitting, shedding in the basement..

Do you have a crazy or interesting gig you can share with us?
When Stevie Wonder walked on stage 5 years ago and played 'Free' with us in Denmark.. Also when I was out with HBE Rocking with Prince was a good memory.

What are your words of wisdom for your fellow drummers out there?
Drummers, I say, love what you do, it's not about how much chops or who you think your better than. It's about supporting and leading music into the next level. That's how you shine..

Last Words, Links, Hashtags and Thank You’s???
I like to say thanks to my homeboy Dre Energy Boyd for the intro.. #Sakaedrum, #Bosphoruscymbal, #Vicfirth, #drumdial, #protectionracket, #lukeroper1977 and all the rhythm and drum lovers in the world.

What a kool thing to have someone like Emanuel take the time to share with us, a little of his drum life.
This kat is WORKING! To be on such a great gig with some great musicians has to be very rewarding.
Emanuel, Thanks 4 taking the time my brother. We really appreciate it.
I want to wish you continued success with all of your endeavors.

See, Sometimes those nice gigs just come to you...By working hard and making relationships and being professional, these seemingly, 'once in a lifetime" situations do come around. It's now up to you to make it happen and grow it from there.

Thx all of you who read Talkin' Chop. I'm glad you're diggin' what I'm trying to do.
So, let's keep it going!
For anyone interested or know a drummer who could use some attention and add to their bio/epk.
Or maybe you just want to do it for fun, that's kool too!
